Lions finalise coaching corps for 2015

The Lions have named the team's 2015 coaching and playing staff for the Club's upcoming matchday against the Storm at Etihad Stadium.

With the Lions out of the top four in the Pro12 and the Springboks at the top of the PRO12 standings, coach Stephen Kearney wants his coaching staff in Sydney before next weekend's Rugby League World Cup match against the All Blacks.

Key points: Lions name coaching staff

The Tigers will name six players for the home-and-away match against the Storm at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

The list also includes the likes of scrum half Lenny Hayes and lock Matt Moore, who will both be playing their Super Rugby seasons.

Cricket Australia has been appointed head of Rugby League operations, but there is no official date set for the signing of a new coach.

"This is a major coup for Steve Kearney, not just because he is the coach of a rugby league team, but because he's the best person for the job to have," said Cricket Australia CEO Shane Richardson.

"In an environment where coaching is highly valued the appointment of one of the world's finest coaches would be a dream come true.

"The Tigers have got some excellent coaching staff already in place and so the appointment of some fresh talent would give the club a great foundation and a bright future heading into the future."

New coach: Watson

Meanwhile, Lions coach Stephen Kearney confirmed that lock Lenny Hayes would not be playing on Saturday against the All Blacks at Etihad Stadium.

Hayes is suffering from a concussion but has played in seven games over the past two weeks as the Lions seek to keep their PRO12 status.

Hayes, 22, has yet to play for his country against France in the pool stages of the Six Nations.

"As an experienced player, I'm just waiting for our game to go the way we want and there is nothing to indicate otherwise," Hayes said.

"That is why I'll be a little disappointed, I'm not playing against my former team tonight.

"It will make the week longer and make me feel better because you know you're not playing your former team against your old team."

Hayes is the youngest player in the top 12 in the Super Rugby competition and will be the first Lions player to play in the Pro12 since Samu Kerevi (19 years and 9 months) did so in 2000.

All Blacks forward Henry Speight was named the starting prop for Super Rugby season seven, with fly half Tadhg Furlong a fringe substitute.

Man kills wife with homemade cannon

A court heard she threw the gun through the window of her home before turning it on herself.

Prosecutors said Mrs Vanegar, 28, had a "very violent temper" and that she did not take the life of her daughter, despite being warned she was dead.

Prosecutor Mark Mearns told the court that Mrs Vanegar had been "deliberately making sure that her daughter did not die".

'Glorious moment'

When confronted by police, Mrs Vanegar gave police a list of her weapons including a homemade rocket launcher, a plastic pipe bomb, a stun gun and a shotgun.

She said she was angry with her daughter, not telling anyone what she was going to do, Mr Mearns added.

He said: "She gave a very brave moment on Sunday because she did not want her daughter to die. She is very angry."

When approached by police, Mrs Vanegar told them: "Don't make me kill you. I don't do stupid stuff."

When questioned after the murder investigation, Mrs Vanegar allegedly admitted shooting her own daughter.

She said: "He got me out of the way."

When asked why she did it, Mrs Vanegar said: "He did me a favour."

She added that her daughter had been in a fight with her and that when she heard Mr Kavanagh was in hospital, she was "shocked".

The trial heard that Mrs Vanegar had a history of mental health problems and a number of her neighbours described her as a difficult woman with "lack of discipline" who once kicked a child in the head as punishment.

Prosecutors said she had been "exhausted" by working 80 hour weeks, while her husband said the last time Mrs Vanegar saw him she was "tired and sore".

Mrs Vanegar also lived in a small detached house near the road where a man and a woman had just been murdered.
